Among these memorable characters is Beatriz Miyahara, an exceptional woman who served for two years as an Army nurse in Saigon. Once she returns to civilian life, one would think she would look for something easier to do, but after all these years, she still works in the intensive care unit of a San Francisco hospital. We meet Jose, a disabled veteran and former sergeant, whose calm voice and soothing demeanor offer some of life's most important lessons. We also meet Gabriel Bendetto, another veteran who subsequently becomes a college professor. In the end, Mr. Urbina's people believe that life is worth living despite the frequent times of despair and disillusion. Gabriel Urbina's heartfelt stories are an absorbing and candid work--a fitting tribute to those men and women who served their country during wartime.
