看這本書的契機是看完Madeline Miller的Galatea後想看 Ovid 的The Metamorphoses，但是在讀前言的時候，發現他被當時的君王Augustus驅逐齣羅馬，而恰好又知道有 Williams的Augustus這樣一本書存在，於是決定先補一下對Julio-Claudian dynasty的認知（雖然都隻是小說而已）這本書的起始是凱撒之死，終結提到瞭少年的 Nero，可以說跨越瞭瞭從Augustus到遠程辦公的瘋王Tiberius到更瘋狂殘暴的Caligula到結巴Claudius再到弑母者Nero。這本書簡直太神瞭。雖然作者說是受到Robert Graves的 I，Claudius 的影響，但是我看瞭幾頁後者，發現Augustus 真的青齣於藍！！！

Augustus 在線電子書著者簡介

約翰·威廉斯（John Williams，1922—1994），美國作傢、詩人、學者。輟過學，當過電颱播音，從過軍。退役後入大學就讀並獲博士學位，於1954年—1985年間在母校丹佛大學任教，教授大學英語及創意寫作。曾編選《文藝復興時期的英語詩歌》，也創作過兩本詩集。

一生隻寫瞭四部小說：《惟有黑夜》（1948）、《屠夫十字鎮》（1960）、《斯通納》（1965）、《奧古斯都》（1973，本書獲得當年美國國傢圖書奬）。

譯者：鄭遠濤，生長於廣州，在北京度過七年，大理兩年，現居美國舊金山市郊，嚮太平洋開軒。英文係畢業，從事翻譯十餘年，譯著成書齣版的作傢包括瑪麗·瑞瑙特（亞曆山大三部麯）、約翰·伯格、約翰·威廉斯與張愛玲等。第30屆梁實鞦文學奬（翻譯類譯詩組）評審奬得主。
