Few writers have transformed literature and theatre so dramatically as Georg Buchner. This Norton Critical Edition is based on the Henry J. Schmidt translations. Each text is accompanied by explanatory annotations. The introduction examines the complexities of Buchner's short life. "Contexts" includes his correspondence, "Criticism" is topically arranged by work and the speeches of four winners of the Georg Buchner Prize are reprinted. A chronology and a bibliography are also included.
