存在主義劇本：由兩個無關緊要角色，羅贊剋蘭茲與吉爾登斯滕的眼中看哈姆雷特。從《哈姆雷特》當中拈齣的颱詞，纔是解讀劇本的核心——他們是「caught up」，正巧被捲入權利鬥爭的洪流之中，而他們又是如此的小角色，因此命運是確定的，兩隻手都有硬幣，所有的數字兩倍都是偶數，一切早已寫就，沒有選擇。他們是如此不重要，以至於已經迷失瞭自己的身份，究竟誰叫什麼名字，已經無關緊要瞭；有關係的是他們是信上寫的那兩個人，能夠代替得哈姆雷特去死。在時代洪流之中，個人是如此茫然無助，而此種迷茫被Tom Stoppard展現得精妙絕倫，充滿奇思。
