The Giver譯為“賜予者”或“授者”，是洛伊絲·洛利最著名的也是最受爭議的作品。在The Giver裏，作者描繪瞭一個想像齣來的烏托邦世界。在這個社會裏，人們的生活都被安排得好好的，人們不用決定工作，不用決定配偶，這些問題，社會都幫個人做好瞭決定。而這個世界也沒有記憶、感情、顔色及音樂，人們隻有最基本的生活需求。但有一個人例外，他一個人承擔瞭整個世界該有的記憶，他必須獨自承受痛苦、恐懼、和孤單，而他也同時知道什麼是溫暖、幸福和愛。這個人被稱為the receiver of memory，也就是the Giver。當12歲的男主角Jonas成為這個the receiver of memory的接班人後，他得到瞭他以前所不曾有過的經驗，而當他知道愈多時，他愈發現這個世界的不閤理，最後他選擇瞭逃離……
作者簡介
Lois Lowry is known for her versatility and invention as a writer. She was born in Hawaii and grew up in New York, Pennsylvania, and Japan. After several years at Brown University, she turned to her family and to writing. She is the author of more than thirty books for young adults, including the popular Anastasia Krupnik series. She has received countless honors, among them the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award, the California Young Reader.s Medal, and the Mark Twain Award. She received Newbery Medals for two of her novels, NUMBER THE STARS and THE GIVER. Her first novel, A SUMMER TO DIE, was awarded the International Reading Association.s Children.s Book Award. Lowry now divides her time between Cambridge and an 1840s farmhouse in Maine.
