充滿強烈的自傳意味，全篇基調若用一個詞形容，就是悲慘：悲慘的時代，悲慘的世界，悲慘的人物與他們之間悲慘的自毀關係。感受自己，感受他人的存在，除死屍般的擁抱與愛撫之外彆無他法。結尾處Dirty那句彌漫著死亡氣息的“我愛你”令人心悸，一種獻祭般必死的不詳感籠罩其中。1935年，Bataille已經預見到他的情人Laure必死無疑瞭麼。另，Lazare的原型是Simone Weil，（St.Lazarus之名換成陰性詞尾的e，影射她的聖人本質），看得齣，Bataille對她愛恨交加。
