老牧師臨終留給幼子的家書，追憶南北戰爭時的家族往事，追問宗教與人生的意義，亦有對當下人世化不開的眷戀，筆調平和深情。只是宗教議論部分礙於理解，不太引人入勝。讀到做牧師的祖父身披血衣上戰場，想起禪宗的激烈響亮。若美國人來讀，應該會領略更深吧。

很适合下雨天读，尤其是雨夜，更突出文字balmy，soothing的效果。这本书在三部曲里头只是基石和序幕，Jack和Lila分别成为后两部衍生作品的主角。叙述者的祖父奋勇参军，也煽动教徒入伍，让人想起旧约《士师记》的时代，他儿子的玩伴名叫Tobias(其实一句台词都没有)，圣经次经(Apocrypha)里头，Tobias是一个涉世未深的(犹太?)小伙子，被父亲打发出去旅行，大天使拉斐尔化身成年轻人陪着他，"So they went forth, and the young man's dog with them"，所以说叙述者六七岁的幼子就是天使喽，一笑(未必就是这个典故)。
