评分作者从不同的小方向(比如在非洲的传教与探险，马克沁机枪发明对帝国扩张的巨大影响，对印度的殖民与管理等)以小见大，回顾了日不落帝国从兴起到衰落的四百年历程，以及探讨了其对当今霸权国家的借鉴与启示。英国国的殖民史在作者优美文笔下主观上多了些人情味和怀旧感(当然作者总体立场还是比较客观的)，阅读体验很不错。
