作者简介
Amartya Sen is the Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, and the winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Economic Science. He has been President of the Indian Economic Association, the American Economic Association, the International Economic Association and the Econometric Society. He has taught at Calcutta, Delhi, Oxford, Cambridge, the London School of Economics, and Harvard.

评分自由既是发展的目的，又是发展的手段——Sen想要着力打破的是“自由是否能够促进发展”的因果讨论，从而将对“发展”的讨论焦点和评价尺度从“产出与绩效”转变为“freedom和capabilities的提升”。很明显Sen的言说对象是各类政策制定者，他指出民主、市场、教育医疗等一系列的机制安排都同时是提升人们freedom和capabilities的目的和手段，不可偏废整体中的任何一个，力图统合诸般原则和价值——在这一点上，他做的很成功，也开启了有意义的视角。 然而，这本书非常缺乏现实感，从不考虑在资源稀缺的情况下这种统合性的价值如何同时实现；经验材料和机制分析也比较粗疏，很多地方并不能对他的论点构成严谨的支撑。
评分准备aw的时候觉得这本书很多地方分析的非常缜密，尤其是关于unintended consequences那一部分。关于改革开放和三年自然灾害的分析也挺值得一看的
