這本書涉及的數學很淺顯，但這種數學史的寫法非常有趣。最後一章的內容是科普書中最喜歡談論的，但同樣的題材，Stillwell寫得比所有我見過的作者都清晰和準確。Stillwell寫的其實很粗糙，很多地方都是一筆帶過，對比一下《可視化復分析》就知道這本書中的一句話可以是整一章的內容。這本書的意義在於：數學係的學生可以知道他們所習以為常的概念是如何産生和發展的，而且不至於陷入無甚意義的細節。至於這些數學史的知識是否重要，隻能是仁者見仁智者見智瞭。
