標題一語雙關，End即是「終結」，也是「目標」。1996年，Neil Postman討論的不是「怎麼教」，而是「教什麼」。且他所關心的教什麼不是知識、技能、工具層麵，而是教育的終極目的，並稱之為「敘事」（narrative），一套全民認同的公共敘事。 這一職能過去由宗教承擔，第一部分將其擴展，「神祇的必要性」、「失敗瞭的神祇」、「失敗瞭的新神祇」和「或許能成功的神祇」。共産主義、納粹主義、法西斯主義被他歸入「失敗瞭的神祇」。後兩者沒有疑議，第一個有待商榷，福山也承認「曆史的終結」推遲瞭。信息技術，被他歸入「失敗瞭的新神祇」，則在過去二十年裏完全沒有失敗。 第二部分，Postman提齣瞭五種公共敘事的可能：地球飛船、墮落天使、美國實驗、多樣性法則、語言編製者/世界構造者。最後一點頗為有趣。
