A short, sleek novel of encounters set in Tokyo during the witching hours between midnight and dawn, and every bit as gripping as Haruki Murakami’s masterworks The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and Kafka on the Shore.
At its center are two sisters—Eri, a fashion model slumbering her way into oblivion, and Mari, a young student soon led from solitary reading at an anonymous Denny’s toward people whose lives are radically alien to her own: a jazz trombonist who claims they’ve met before, a burly female “love hotel” manager and her maid staff, and a Chinese prostitute savagely brutalized by a businessman. These “night people” are haunted by secrets and needs that draw them together more powerfully than the differing circumstances that might keep them apart, and it soon becomes clear that Eri’s slumber—mysteriously tied to the businessman plagued by the mark of his crime—will either restore or annihilate her.
After Dark moves from mesmerizing drama to metaphysical speculation, interweaving time and space as well as memory and perspective into a seamless exploration of human agency—the interplay between self-expression and empathy, between the power of observation and the scope of compassion and love. Murakami’s trademark humor, psychological insight, and grasp of spirit and morality are here distilled with an extraordinary, harmonious mastery.</p>
其实对于a.d这本书已不象过去那样仔细, 毕竟村上先生也没有刻意的让读者在独特的文字里面 反而是区别其他的电影手法和似曾相识的情节让人 即使没有看署名也知道这是先生的文字 一切情节只不过限定在午夜, 当太阳升起,一切又回到表面 读它我劝各位在午夜夜深时非常有feel 这...
评分After finished reading After Dark, I can say that I have read all Murakami's novels, two in English, others in Chinese. Translation novels are easier to read with less unfamiliar words than original English novel. For this reason, the process of reading the...

评分第一次看英文版的村上春树,感觉很奇怪。不过反而比中译本要好懂一些,不知道什么原因。 一开始反应不过来,不过当可以被称为女主人公的Mari与长号手大段的对话出现时,可以感受到鲜明的村上风格。那女孩子尽管个性别扭,但她的说话好像就是自己讲的话,很自然而淡漠,有时穿插...
评分村上春树汉字英文亲笔签名。
评分experimental using the third/or fourth person view, yet a disappointment by his high standard. i almost completely skipped the eri part: c'mon, enough is enough, you can only play with boring nothingness to a certain degree. it does get me to care about a
