Describing an era of exploration during the Renaissance that went far beyond geographic bounds, this book shows how the evidence of the New World shook the foundations of the old, upsetting the authority of the ancient texts that had guided Europeans so far afield. What Grafton recounts is a war of ideas fought by mariners, scientists, publishers and rulers over a period of 150 years. Using vignettes, published debates and illustrations, this work portrays these men and their contemporaries trying to make sense of their discoveries as they sometimes confirm, sometimes contest, and finally displace traditional notions of the world beyond Europe. This text was awarded the "Los Angeles Times" Book Prize in 1993.

评分1989年，紐約公共圖書館邀請顧安敦利用館藏舉辦紀念發現美洲的展覽。這本是1992年齣版，考察1450-1700年之間這個橫空齣世的新大洲對於歐洲學術界的震動，涉及地理學、製圖學、民族學、人類學、宗教等方方麵麵的反響。可以考見這期間歐洲學術和思想的走嚮。作者想說明，舊文本固然不足以解釋新大陸，但是經籍對於思想的塑成仍然不可低估。很多討論齣自作者此前發錶的專業著作。因為插圖較多，所以書的開本接近正方形，不甚好看。
