Steinberg argues in this work that the artists regarded the deliberate exposure of Christ's genitalia as an affirmation of kinship with the human condition. Christ's lifelong virginity, understood as potency under check, and the first offer of blood in the circumcision, both required acknowledgment of the genital organ. 最近系里一位资深老教授在开Dissertation workshop的课上，第一周就布置了这一本书，目的是让学生通过这一系列的论战来学会如何make an argument。此书的第二版包括了1983年的原文，之后各方的批评，以及作者十多年后通过新一轮的研究做出的回应 (格式上有些以前Art Bulletin里intervention的味道)。
评分有理有据，使人信服。
