非常精彩，不愧是98年一出版就引起轰动的著作，每一章在当时都能引向一个新的研究方向，即便是20后，很多观点看起来也不过时，一直以为对宗教不感兴趣，现在觉得可能只是写的不够精彩而已，真正精彩的著作即便是再陌生的领域也是能让人印象深刻的。除了第8章都仔细读了，可以说的很多，但是最值得一说的就是，既不是Religion of Roman Republic，也不是Religion of Roman Empire，而是Religions of Rome, Rome的空间意义是绝对重要的，BNP选择罗马城作为写作的核心，正是因为，所谓的Urbs Romana绝不等同于Orbis Romanus，同时从urbs向orbis的转向，绝对是一个非常值得研究的问题，也是永远不会失去活力的问题。

三位学者合著，Beard和Price所著章节大体能猜出来，而后者对东部行省的研究也是之后要重点关照的对象。总的来说，作为通史，又出众手，在详略协调方面或多或少会出一些问题。早期罗马历史的记忆与虚构在Beard的笔下张弛有度；晚期共和国到帝国时期“诸宗教”（religions）的渐次展开，以及关于它们在信仰体系中的相对地位的论述十分引人入胜。
