從711到1492的西班牙，每一個世紀講述一個人或一件事。最早讀Peter the Venerable在Toledo寫的講述他如何翻譯可蘭經的信件是兩年以前，當時隻把它當做一個語言課的文本。如今這本書把它放在第一次十字軍東徵、伊比利亞半島Toledo的攻剋、還有Cluny修道院和Cistercian Barnard of Clairvaux的不閤等語境下看。中世紀歐洲牽一發而動全身；本書的敘事讓人贊嘆。盡管Harold Bloom在序言說，作者過渡美化瞭中世紀西班牙的不同宗教的和諧“共存。”

考慮到作者本人多語言的文化背景和研究中世紀詩歌的履曆，本書行文不夠乾淨利落的情況還是比較讓人吃驚的：一是不少長句拖遝導緻論說重點不明確，二是有些關鍵詞用的頻率次數實在太多瞭。精彩之處在有兩個章節：1、從阿維森納穿梭到阿韋羅伊、邁濛尼德的個人曆史遭遇最後落腳阿奎納；2、對塞萬提斯的解讀非常有博爾赫斯短篇的韻味。
