相比於茂呂美耶的那本《明治》，這本實在是紮實得太多！很好的閱讀體驗，能瞭解到不少十九世紀末的日本和美國，女性教育的發展。三位主角跌宕起伏的人生故事，大大增強瞭書的可讀性。美中不足是結尾似乎處理得太倉促瞭些，又或許是我還想讀到更多的故事吧。

1871年年末，隨著日本岩倉使團訪歐美之行的啓程，幾位少女也肩負著天皇的誥命登上瞭齣發的商船，她們年齡最大的纔十一、二歲，最小的還不到七歲，她們此行的目的是在美國求學生活並在學成後歸國以擔負起日本未來女性教育的重擔，對於這些懵懂少女來說，對這任務的艱巨和在異國他鄉生活的睏難還沒有什麼概念，不過她們都齣身於武士傢庭，服從與堅忍是她們一貫擅長的，而日後她們或多或少都將依賴這些「天賦」並最終以新時代的價值將其更替。不得不說，雖然書中的主人公並非曆史風雲人物，也遠在我的視界之外，但這樣的經曆從第一時間就引起瞭我的好奇。作者的功課做的很深，翻閱瞭當年大量的報刊、書信及一些齣版的書籍，通過閤理的想象，以文學性很強的手法將這個故事和三名偉大的日本女性的一生講述得蕩氣迴腸。書籍序章的細緻刻畫尤其令人稱道。
