Cora is a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. Life is hellish for all slaves, but Cora is an outcast even among her fellow Africans, and she is coming into womanhood; even greater pain awaits. Caesar, a recent arrival from Virginia, tells her of the Underground Railroad and they plot their escape. Like Gulliver, Cora encounters different worlds on each leg of her journey.

一本会让人觉得英文特别美的小说。文字的流畅和简洁在最近几年读过的英美文学里数一数二。最喜欢它在历险故事里加入的一些对于人性和历史的思考。一些突然的转折让人意识到一个人在现实面前是多么的无力，但即使是这样也不能停下不顾一切向自由奔跑的脚步。

评论里看见很多忿忿不平，集中表现在此书同主题著作已太多而角度不够新。对我而言，此书却恰恰让我面对“常识”的时候，对某种别人的苦难有了新的想象力。

作为国图以及今年英语小说的各种奖项的大热门，实在是分量不够！美国文学怎么最近下降的如此厉害？黑人文学的崛起？甚至不如莫里森啊。脑洞是非常大，但是除此之外，除了司空见惯的黑奴受虐和白人帮助，真的看不到太多，就连情感交锋的深度都是以前老旧的。当然，美国人看历史的眼光自然跟我不一样，他们带着更多的反思在看，我只能是一个旁观者，书中角色很多，但是总觉得不够深入，太浅表，动机和想法都非常直接，最后的大屠杀固然惨，但是女主人公Cora才是真的不争气！如果她早点去北方，哪有这些事啊，贪图眼前的安逸，带来一连串的灾难，结果大家都被她害死了，她又逃跑出来，真是有点无语。不过，好在仍然算好看，很紧张。美国作家很考虑当下的读者，书都越写越浅显，难有大器。

看一段就要缓一缓。因为学过美国历史，也就对里面很多historical background更加敏感。真的太好看了想重新去补美国历史了。
