Cora is a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. Life is hellish for all slaves, but Cora is an outcast even among her fellow Africans, and she is coming into womanhood; even greater pain awaits. Caesar, a recent arrival from Virginia, tells her of the Underground Railroad and they plot their escape. Like Gulliver, Cora encounters different worlds on each leg of her journey.

“地下铁”这一意象本身，即蕴含着某种对立的意思。既然有under the ground，自然少不了on / above the ground.起初，人随心所欲地游曳在蔚蓝的星球上，而土地获得承载权力的内涵的时间，对于46亿年而言，可以忽略不计。这种对抗的张力，在其他作品中早有呈现——如南斯拉夫导演库斯图里卡的《地下》——描绘的就是谎言裹挟着“地下王国”与战争机器的场景。Whitehead的小说意图讨论借“地下铁”这一意象，直达自由这一主题。思忖再三，总觉得“自由”一词的不妥。我极度厌恶“自由”这一概念，因为它往往堕为某种野蛮的图腾。而小说中呈现的奴役，我更倾向于界定为“自存”——当生存与繁衍的生物性本能受到威胁：抗争或者逃避，从南方蓄奴州到北方自由地，不见得更加地自由，不过是保全了性命。

一本会让人觉得英文特别美的小说。文字的流畅和简洁在最近几年读过的英美文学里数一数二。最喜欢它在历险故事里加入的一些对于人性和历史的思考。一些突然的转折让人意识到一个人在现实面前是多么的无力，但即使是这样也不能停下不顾一切向自由奔跑的脚步。
