被大历史裹挟的家庭史和个人史。战争就像是书里爸爸的grandmother患上的肺结核，或多或少或浅或深地在爸爸的肺上刻下阴影，战争也是棋盘对决，只是我们每个人无力渺小到甚至算不上棋盘上的一兵一卒，只能被拍打和揉捏，被塑造成现在的样子。开篇新生儿的出生，使作者开始了解并重构越战史及其父母的成长史，他们的颠沛流离、悲欢离合和挣扎求生，直至理解父母执拗的性格，并体会家庭的意义，这个时候，总在声称没有准备好的作者，才是真正地成为了一个"grown—up"。最后的最后，新生儿长成了自由独立的十岁男孩，没有战争与缺失，甚至没有父亲或母亲的影子，我想这也许就是父母struggle的理由，以及作者寻求的答案了，也没有什么比这更好的了。

不是二代移民典型的身份认同作品。首一整章写新生，messy而艰难。中间大部分是父母在越南的家国历史。在越南蝼蚁求生，至出走美国，隐约并置的是一条“重生”产道。末章落脚于生老病死，点题的“尽力而为”(存活)，是为父母的信条，亦是“幸存者”移民二代真正的文化遗产，刻在血肉里的处世之道

去越南前要做点功课，我读了这本图文回忆录《尽力而为》（The Best We Could Do），作者是越南裔美国人Thi Bui，写自己和家人在越战结束后，颠沛流离逃到马来西亚难民营，然后辗转移民美国投靠亲戚，审视自己的身份认同问题以外，还反思战争对父母执拗性格的影响。我读完想起上个月和父母一起采访他们的朋友，一群参加1979年中越战争的老兵。有位老兵说：“永远不要轻易说打仗，战争能让一个国家倒退十年，还应该为受害的人负责余生。” 受害的人何止活在战火中的人呢，即便他们飘洋过海过上新生活，心理阴影也还是会笼罩下一代——《尽力而为》作者的父母就好像是第一次世界大战中的迷惘一代（Lost Generation），这种迷惘感在家庭中不断延伸，作者刻画得很入骨。

Love every detail of this book. Such a meaningful reading right after my trip to Chongqing. 今年恰逢婆婆外公金婚纪念，外公八十大寿。上周回去看了好多老照片，对家里的历史非常感兴趣。The best we could do这个标题也很有意思，让我想起了他们在历史节点中的选择，让这个家成为可能，也间接塑造了我们。

Thi Bui was born in Vietnam and immigrated to the United States as a child. She studied art and law and thought about becoming a civil rights lawyer, but became a public school teacher instead. Bui lives in Berkeley, California, with her son, her husband, and her mother. The Best We Could Do is her debut graphic novel.
