Beard did a wonderful job to make Classics relevant to today's social-political dynamics. Her references to the passages in Odyssey, Lucretia, and many others help me see the valences of the texts. Women's voice are not so stifled nowadays, but women still receive more acerbic comments and quick negligence. Approval from men is innately a problem.

啊喲，看的時候頭痛好多古羅馬古希臘典故，看完纔發現其實是看過的紀錄片裏齣沒的古典學大佬。兩篇內容不算很多，說是manifesto倒很貼切。指齣何為power（被看到，可改變與話語權比起占據社會金字塔尖更重要）很受啓發。發現後浪19年三月齣瞭譯本。。。

買這本書是在Elizabeth Warren的“Nevertheless, she persisted”事件之後。講的是女性的失聲和被剝奪權力——在公共舞颱上女性沉默或消失，在公共語境中女性與leadership、authority、power等詞格格不入。昨晚坐在餐桌邊讀這本書，小兔一直吵鬧試圖讓我陪他玩，坐在客廳裏的圓律師把小兔叫瞭過去，訓話說：“媽媽在看一本很重要的書，其中很重要的一點就是女性不能被你這樣的小狗吵鬧而乾不瞭正事，所以你現在跟我呆在一起，不準再過去。”????真是讀這本書一個非常可愛的注腳瞭。

兩篇演講的講稿。迴溯到西方經典的源頭，探尋最初西方社會文化模闆的成型，如何至今影響到人們對於女性、公共錶達以及權力的想象。非常舒服的行文，清晰明確，有節製，還有幽默感，古典文本與時事新聞中的案例信手拈來，讀的很痛快。

Mary Beard is a professor of classics at Newnham College, Cambridge, and the Classics editor of the TLS. She has world-wide academic acclaim, and is a fellow of the British Academy and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Her previous books include most recently SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome, and the bestselling, Wolfson Prize-winning Pompeii, The Roman Triumph, also The Parthenon and Confronting the Classics.
