韋納爾·卡爾·海森伯（Werner Karl Heisenberg，1901-1976）是當代最卓越的理論物理學傢和原子物理學傢之一。1976年，物理學傢維格納在悼念海森伯的文章中說：“沒有一個活著的理論物理學傢在這個領域內比他貢獻更大。”海森伯是量子力學的創始人之一。他為原子、原子核、基本粒子物理學的發展奮鬥瞭終生。他是繼玻爾之後的哥本哈根學派的主要代錶人物。

海森伯平1901年12月5日生於德國維爾茨堡。原子物理學也正是在這前後誕生和開始發展起來的。1911年他到慕尼黑上中學。1919年他首次接觸到原子概念。1920年他進入慕尼黑大學隨原子物理學傢索末菲等學習物理學。卓越的物理學傢泡利是他的同學和摯友。
