Nothing has generated more controversy in the social sciences than the turn toward culture, variously known as the linguistic turn, culturalism, or postmodernism. This book examines the impact of the cultural turn on two prominent social science disciplines, history and sociology, and proposes new directions in the theory and practice of historical research. The editors provide an introduction analyzing the origins and implications of the cultural turn and its postmodernist critiques of knowledge. Essays by leading historians and historical sociologists reflect on the uses of cultural theories and show both their promise and their limitations. Sewell對於文化的解釋並不是要在已經非常紛繁復雜的學術傳統裏再立一套關於行動、符號、意義和結構的解說，而是要為經驗研究者提供一個切實可行的觀察和寫作方案。我的路數和他非常相近。不是像裴宜理那樣武斷地給中國所謂的公民社會文化貼上一個“反洛剋主義”的標簽，而是要探尋新的概念如何形成，如何被人轉化和扭麯，如何在有意和無意的行動中構建一個新的體係。缺乏一貫性正是這個體係的活力所在。
评分我心愛的新文化史和曆史社會學終於匯閤瞭，文化的曆史社會學（cultural historical sociology）這一提法被正式提齣來啦。Lynn Hunt等大佬開始強調新文化史研究不應該以犧牲或拋棄社會史或曆史社會學的分析為代價。導論裏隻字未提“新文化史”，而籠統地稱之為“文化轉嚮”。後記特意讓Hayden White來撰寫，亦是有意之舉呢～
