Now more than ever before there is an increased
focus upon the quality and cost of health care. The
delivery of health care is being shared by many persons
with different types of preparation, and, while respon-
sibilities of health care workers are broadening, the dif-
ferences among roles are more difficult to determine.
Professional and technical nurses, in diagnosing and
treating human responses to actual or potential health
needs, are constantly being challenged to help patients
and their families prevent illness and respond to phys-
ical and emotional stress. In doing so nurses function as
coordinators of care and patient advocates. Education
for these roles requires a basic theoretical and technical
background that will provide the skills and competen-
cies necessary to continually improve nursing care,
responding to the increasing complexity of health
care.
