The months went by, and Little Vie showed
more promise with every week that passed. When
he came out of the stable for his early morning
workout his head was always high, his ears pointed
forward, and his eyes seemed fixed on something
far off that only he could see.
One morning Pony leaned forward on the
colt s neck and whispered to him, "What is it you
see, fellow? Is it the Gold Cup shining way out
there ahead somewhere? Maybe it s a new track
record you see set up on a board in the sky. That
would be the best yet. A new world s record. Can
you feel it in your bones already, Little Vic?"
That morning as he rode the colt around the
track Pony dreamed that he was wearing the
brightly colored silks of some great stable and
that Little Vic, with Pony up, was breaking the
wire in front of a roaring grandstand
