真是挺不错的一部著作，为写论文看了其中一部。政治学教科书的通说，从来都是SNTV制度不利于大政党，而相对有利于小政党（川人 2004）。Cox和菅原的论法则在于，大政党可以有效地调节党内的立候补，而在野党之间的选举协力总是时聚时散的。这部著作算是找到了一个中间的变量来解释在野党选举协力上存在的问题：SNTV制度下在野党互不兼容地组织票和政党组织的特性。一个政党的跃进，就意味着另一个政党的削弱。不过此书的研究基本上都是案例研究，也就是因果机制的叙述性分析。大概就推定基于作者此种解释的因果效果多少是不那么容易证实的。不过，一般来说英文著作的日本政治研究案例叙述的完成度都是非常高的，研究设计也还不错，这一点，日文著作反倒处处相形见绌，读了大量论文对于人们认知度的更新，也贡献不大，，，
