★★★★★ 真的好好。當storytelling在方方麵麵，say，決定著無間道和反無間道的結果，在universality as conspiracy的現實中，文學的重要性就愈發突顯。James Wood的論述絕不是最嚴密的，但在敘事上這反而其實不重要，因為他的洞悉之穿透力是驚人的，它可以把思考釘住，你為之絆腳，甚至於被打動，它那麼接近真相，就好像真的有像這顆鐵釘一般確切存在的真相似的。

拿起來就放不下來。短小，精緻，觀察力驚人。文風親切平易不學院派賣弄，偶爾一點小幽默。最美妙的是內容，從free indirect style切入，到福樓拜的並置細節和浪蕩兒的‘i am a camera’，到 gratuitous detail所營造齣的生活感，到用transparencies／opacities來革新福斯特的扁形人物／圓形人物，到意識流的發展，人物由穩定到變化；最隔的部分是語言一節，因為不是英文母語所以很多語言的細微美妙之處無法體會，即使人傢指齣來瞭並解釋瞭好像也無法完全理解（嘆氣，但放到中文小說中則太多切身經驗）最後例行批判genre和商業現實主義，立場還是傳統的嚴肅現實主義小說最棒。但重審美輕意識形態批評和抓細節的方法太喜歡。
