一本应该入土的所谓经典，经济方面比较值得一看，政治和文化方面认识过于简单，社会方面惨不忍睹，如BMCR上的评价所说，这本书是写给半个世纪前"需要英雄、浸淫在战争与政治中、相信帝国的正当性与文明的前进、并且碰巧能阅读拉丁文的特权阶层基督徒英国学校男生"的。

读得零碎，作者的论述线索看不太出。为提比略翻案的部分比较有说服力。另致楼上那位，关注社会史很正常，可是无视政治和战争史，可算不得明智
