The Beauty Queen of Leenane was first presented as a Druid Theatre/Royal Court Theatre co-production in January 1996. Set in the mountains of Connemara, County Galway, The Beauty Queen of Leenane tells the darkly comic tale of Maureen Folan, a plain and lonely woman in her early forties, and Mag her manipulative ageing mother whose interference in Maureen's first and potentially last loving relationship sets in motion a train of events that is as gothically funny as it is horrific.

两个自私的女人在里南这个贫穷而封闭的小村子里互相撕扯着坠入地狱。麦克唐纳的情节剧"选美皇后"看起来很"兰闺春怨"，但相比却高出几个层级。作者恰当的遣词造句让母女二人的每个野蛮行径都在情绪和逻辑上十分可信，又通过细节的搭建让观众吸了一口又一口的凉气。一个准确的制作应当让观众观戏时牢牢抓住椅子把手，并在最后一个包袱后把他们打入黑暗。
评分看完剧本才发现Project Rounabout版的舞台剧除了必要的本土化，几乎跟足剧本没多少改动的，也终于让我解开了看剧时的疑惑，原来最后并没有反转再反转，只反转了一次，这样逻辑就理顺了。被困山中的母女控制与反控制，互相折磨的故事，母亲要把女儿困在身边照顾自己，女儿则抓住所有机会要逃离。然而离开了的邻居，则感觉自己不属于任何地方。挺悲哀的两难困境。
评分唯一不理解的梗就是Maureen说的那句You haven't been sniffing the paraffin lamps again? 这句台词到底是什么意思？
评分Life grinds you stir-crazy./The revelation with Pato wasn't convincing enough. Did she turn back in a frenzy knowing he had gone, and club Mag in despair? When did the false memory set in? How could it have been so like his wording? Seemed like a wee bit of cheating there. Maureen was also a bit too flatly vicious throughout, I don't know.
评分相互折磨看着好窒息。泼热油那段有美版咒怨的味道了，凭这段和老太太从摇椅上倒下那段，拍部惊悚片应该是好看的。
