李安宅(1900-1985年)，河北省迁安县人。字仁斋,笔名任责。著名社会学、人类学、民族学家。曾任四川省政协委员,中国社会学研究会顾问、中国民族学会顾问、中国民俗学研究会顾问等。1926年燕京大学社会学系毕业,后赴美国深造。1938年赴甘肃拉卜楞寺对藏传佛教进行实地调查,后任教于成都华西大学。1947年到1949年在美英从事研究工作。1950年进藏任教。1963年任教于四川师范学院。1985年逝世。一生专治民族学、宗教学、社会学、藏学的研究,颇有成绩。宗教方面的专著有《藏族宗教史之实地研究》、《拉卜楞――李安宅的调查报告》、《宗教与边疆建设》等。

作者从沦陷了的北平，辗转到了大西北，随后，历尽艰难险阻，深入甘南藏区，对藏传佛教格鲁派（黄教）六大寺院之一的拉卜楞寺，作了长达三年之久的实地考察，“取得了大量材料，写成了《藏族宗教史之实地研究》，这是国内、外公认为通过实地考察和社会调查而撰写的有关藏族宗教史的第一部杰作”（雷洁琼序言中语）。该书在介绍藏族文化背景与历史概况的基础上，着重介绍藏族在信仰佛教以前的信仰和早期佛教；格鲁派——革新或当权的佛教；格鲁派寺院——拉卡楞寺。这部著作虽然是半个世纪以前的旧作，但它是我国对藏传佛教进行实地考察的一个开端，标志着一个时代的学术水平。
