这本小册子实际上是为意识形态(ideology)做的辩护。Ideology在当代有被污名化的倾向，在中文权里甚至有个略有贬义的翻译“意蒂牢结”，代表着非理性的偏见。Freeden花了100多页篇幅其实就表达了一个核心观点：没有意识形态就不会有政治，所以我们要正确的认识它。第八章对后现代主义/后结构主义的批判很精彩，但比较抽象，不太容易读懂。
