He seems to have no personality, no self, beyond the qualities neccessary for his position. This is because for Stevens, being a butler is not merely a job, it is the core of his identity. At the end of the book, however, he realizes that he has sacrificed his humanity in the name of duty and dignity.

文字如行云流水般流畅典雅，很平静但又十足动人的阅读体验。人生的选择在细小的日子里堆叠，直到多年后回首才发现路途已远，莫可奈何。全文都很老式英国，但结尾一场告别的戏却又传达出东方的意蕴，异曲同工的含蓄和内敛，含着深沉的情感与怅惘。“明日隔山岳，世事两茫茫。”

这部是石黑一雄最出名的作品，却意外的比他前两部小说平淡。结构比前两部小说紧密，可能是它的优点。放弃了移民视角和主题，小说的关注点变得简洁，没有了远山淡影的局促；但我还是怀疑它并不高于后者，得奖的原因或许是它更加英国吧。

累贅的語言婉轉透視出敘事者疲乏的、被動的存在，不直接道出所有意味著真相的殘酷，人性以憂鬱的姿態成為被侵蝕成之物。一個徹頭徹尾的僕人，餘生注定是永遠永遠的，哀美的，黃昏。

Kazuo Ishiguro was born in Nagasaki, Japan, in 1954 and moved to Britain at the age of five. He is the author of five novels, including The Remains of the Day, an international bestseller that won the Booker Prize and was adapted into an award-winning film. Ishiguro's work has been translated into twenty-eight languages. In 1995, he received an Order of the British Empire for service to literature, and in 1998 was named a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government. He lives in London with his wife and daughter.
