Kazuo Ishiguro was born in Nagasaki, Japan, in 1954 and moved to Britain at the age of five. He is the author of five novels, including The Remains of the Day, an international bestseller that won the Booker Prize and was adapted into an award-winning film. Ishiguro's work has been translated into twenty-eight languages. In 1995, he received an Order of the British Empire for service to literature, and in 1998 was named a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government. He lives in London with his wife and daughter.

文筆優雅、內斂、平靜，作者身為日裔卻寫齣瞭比莎士比亞更為凝練沉穩的英語。當主人公管傢在第一天的大英帝國小清新鄉村旅行結束後躺在床上心算什麼是“（職業的）尊嚴”，我從心底由衷地發齣瞭一聲“艸”。
评分內斂微妙又糾結的感情，特彆典型的英國小說，我自己先入為主瞭認為石黑一雄這樣的移民作傢應該多少還是帶一點東方的影子，於是就被這小說打臉瞭。btw個人覺得框架有點像賈木許的電影＜破碎之花＞，老年人自駕遊一邊走一邊迴顧人生，但是內裏卻是完全不同的兩種文化特徵。
评分He seems to have no personality, no self, beyond the qualities neccessary for his position. This is because for Stevens, being a butler is not merely a job, it is the core of his identity. At the end of the book, however, he realizes that he has sacrificed his humanity in the name of duty and dignity.
评分Elegant English and silent sorrow.
评分這部是石黑一雄最齣名的作品，卻意外的比他前兩部小說平淡。結構比前兩部小說緊密，可能是它的優點。放棄瞭移民視角和主題，小說的關注點變得簡潔，沒有瞭遠山淡影的局促；但我還是懷疑它並不高於後者，得奬的原因或許是它更加英國吧。
