Internalized self-loathing occurs to everyone regardless of race, gender, and sexual orientation. Toni Morrison chooses to show "how" rather than answer "why", thus suspending the judgement. The narrative reminds me of As I Lay Dying from time to time, though it is not as neat. ("Double consciousness" might also prove useful in interpreting it.)
