羅傑•科特瑞爾（Roger Cotterrell），倫敦大學瑪麗王後•威斯特費爾學院法理學教授。主要著作有：《法理學的政治分析：法律哲學批判導論》（The Politics of Jurisprudence：A Critical Introduction to Legal Philosophy）；《法律社會學導論》（The Sociology of Law：An Introduction）；《法律、文化與社會：社會理論鏡像中的法律觀念》（Law, Culture And Society: Legal Ideas in the Mirror of Social Theory）；《法律的共同體：社會學視野中的法律理論》（Law's Community: Legal Theory in Sociological Perspective）

本書討論法理學研究什麼、它試圖做什麼以及如何完成這些工作，最為重要的是，它的諸多結論如何能夠影響法律實踐的日常問題，以及主要的社會、道德和政治觀念。作者選擇對幾位關鍵法學傢的觀點進行分析，闡明瞭法律理論的一般特點，並嘗試用一種職業主義和政治分析的方法，來錶達這些理論。

本書第一版更多是作為學生教材使用。對此，作者開闢瞭他的方法，在此版中展現瞭自初版以來逐漸引人關注的理論中最為重要的領域。新版做瞭大量修訂，著述更為明晰，並且恰當的評述瞭迄今為止的相關文獻。有兩章新內容處理瞭近十年來興起的對英美法律哲學非常多樣化的批判性進路。
