几十年前，Rachel Carson关于为何不应使用DDT的书。书一出来，即遭到DDT生产厂家的攻击。更糟糕的是，因为后来禁止使用DDT，蚊虫没有被消灭掉，导致非洲等地疟疾数量迅速上升。因此反对者们谩骂Carson谋杀了比希特勒还多的人。于是，2002年，联合国又部分开放DDT的使用，以应对疟疾。但是，接着也有环保主义者指出，应该采取生态方法控制蚊虫，而不是DDT。因为如果大量使用DDT，蚊虫会产生抗药性，甚至更加肆虐。——这是一个非常值得探讨的问题。这本书的观念在今人看来，已经落后了，因为我们都知道不能大量使用杀虫剂，知道生态链的重要性。但在当时，是非常突破的一本书，且它的争论也尚未停息。作者文风非常讲究，甚至有点过于讲究，而不像科普读物。

Rachel Carson (1907-1964) spent most of her professional life as a marine biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
