sometimes Conrad is self-contradictory, on one hand, this novel seems to say that a man should put his trust in life, love and hope; yet on the other hand, the title, Victory and the last word, nothing are paradoxical. Axel Heyst was influenced by his father, a Schopenhauer-like figure, who enjoys his solitude and has a contempt to the world.
