觉得作者有点将中国文学搬过去套上美国的背景。里面有一张很像是仿写鲁迅的“吃人”。当然也夹杂了一点个人经验。可惜读的不是原文，不知道作者功底如何。不过还是提供了一些宝贵的社会背景知识。
评分无语，最后几页竟然没了，总会提及从前男尊女卑的社会，女性主义思想的萌发。以儿换女的父亲在那一重男轻女的时代过得无奈，国内饥荒文革，国外修路淘金，那一时代的人命途多舛，艰难生存。《其它几个美国人的故事》还不错，送母亲的鬼魂回家；痴迷麦芽和共产主义的宾叔神经大条，害怕在国外被误杀投毒；姨妈和阿福姨父漂泊的生存之旅，还有加州的母亲与新加坡的弟弟分隔多年才打电话的场景，真实而令人唏嘘不已。“50年才打一次电话，什么也没说。”“这就是电话的特性，听到声音就足够了。”

评分华裔劳工异乡血泪史。读完原文再读译本感觉像在读两本不一样的书。 2019.9.13再度读完。
