無語，最後幾頁竟然沒瞭，總會提及從前男尊女卑的社會，女性主義思想的萌發。以兒換女的父親在那一重男輕女的時代過得無奈，國內飢荒文革，國外修路淘金，那一時代的人命途多舛，艱難生存。《其它幾個美國人的故事》還不錯，送母親的鬼魂迴傢；癡迷麥芽和共産主義的賓叔神經大條，害怕在國外被誤殺投毒；姨媽和阿福姨父漂泊的生存之旅，還有加州的母親與新加坡的弟弟分隔多年纔打電話的場景，真實而令人唏噓不已。“50年纔打一次電話，什麼也沒說。”“這就是電話的特性，聽到聲音就足夠瞭。”

评分看瞭中譯本纔突然感受到湯亭亭文字的張力。雖然譯本已經很流暢瞭，但原文裏那些充滿奇幻感、看瞭讓人精神一振的段落在譯本中就失色瞭很多
评分與《女勇士》不同，這部華裔美國人的迴憶錄以中國的男性為主角。每一章節前都有對中國傳統神話故事或經典故事的改寫。能在美國成為暢銷書的原因是可想而知的。
