萨米耶·德梅斯特（Xavler de Maistre，1763—1852），出身贵族，投身军旅，1790年因为一场决斗事件被罚关禁闭在家中42天，并在这段期间内以玩票性质写成《在自己房间里的旅行》一书，1795年甫一出版，便成为畅销书，引起极大注意与回响，开创此种另类游记的先河，在19世纪法国文学史上算得上经典之一。德梅斯特不自认为作家，著作也不多，流传下来的可能仅只这本书。

What do you do when you find yourself imprisoned in your room for six weeks? Xavier de Maistre, a twenty-seven-year-old Frenchman found himself in this uneasy situation when he was arrested in Turin after a duel, in the Spring of 1790.
