薩米耶·德梅斯特（Xavler de Maistre，1763—1852），齣身貴族，投身軍旅，1790年因為一場決鬥事件被罰關禁閉在傢中42天，並在這段期間內以玩票性質寫成《在自己房間裏的旅行》一書，1795年甫一齣版，便成為暢銷書，引起極大注意與迴響，開創此種另類遊記的先河，在19世紀法國文學史上算得上經典之一。德梅斯特不自認為作傢，著作也不多，流傳下來的可能僅隻這本書。

What do you do when you find yourself imprisoned in your room for six weeks? Xavier de Maistre, a twenty-seven-year-old Frenchman found himself in this uneasy situation when he was arrested in Turin after a duel, in the Spring of 1790. But even confined to his room, as he was, with only a butler and a dog for company, de Maistre managed to fill his time by embarking on a journey around his bedroom, later writing an account of what he had seen, and eight years later, making a second journey, this time travelling at night, and making it as far as the window ledge.
