评分作为德裔美国人在二战时被德军俘虏并经历了德国境内最惨烈的空袭，可以说冯内果前半生的课题就是身份认同，而后半生的课题则是寂寞。他的无神论与当时大部分知识分子类同，其实只是对盲从宗教的过激反扑，正反合里的反，钟摆在两端荡够自然会回到中心。他的幽默还是那么耀目，然而悲凉之感亦相当强烈，令人觉得只是苦中作乐。
