Caroline Finkel grew up in the west of Scotland, first went to Turkey when she was eighteen, and has lived in Istanbul for many years. She has a Ph.D. in Ottoman history from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, has researched extensively in Ottoman archives and libraries.
