1905. 時隔幾年 終於讀完瞭. the cursed impudence, the petty unselfishness, a mere little vexatious incident. "There's something majestic in the bad taste of Italy, it's not the bad taste of a country that knows no better, it has not the nervous vulgarity of England or the blinded vulgarity of Germany, it observes beauty and chooses to pass it by."2333

福斯特筆下的諷刺是溫和的。他的長處是讓筆下的人物不斷對話（有點囉嗦），來推進人物性格和心理上的變化。小說的局限性也很明顯，當時的作者就像自己筆下描述的Philip一樣 "without passion, look on life as a spectacle, don't enter it, only find it funny or beautiful".

前半部分維多利亞的氣質太強瞭，福斯特感覺像是被簡奧斯汀附身瞭一樣。關於階級和文化問題的討論簡直就是後期幾本書的“雛形”。

福斯特的第一部长篇，轻喜剧的剧情和人物，处理的却是重大的人生和文化课题，体现于其间的价值观既结实又微妙，稍有不慎就会有失去掌控，造成政治和情感“不正确”的危险。迹近完美的debut。 马爱农的翻译可圈可点，遣词造句与原文的风格丝丝入扣。Great job!

看完后再回头看的前言，却令我非常惊讶：作者跟我看的仿佛是两个故事。 两个死亡事件在我看来根本不是小说的重点。对福斯特来说，“事件”从来不是重点，事件只是聚点，重要的是通过这个点来展示背后扭结的文化问题以及身处其间的个人的困惑。这部小说的重点是展示英国保守狭隘...  

书不长，很吸引人，两天就看完了。英国的拘谨和刻板，意大利的美与生机，两种文化形成了鲜明的对比。 假如一开始是阿博特小姐嫁给吉诺，也许就不会有悲剧的发生了，结局会很好多，她清楚得看透吉诺的本来面目——不过是一个有着男人力气与激情的小男孩而已。可惜世界上没有如果...
