寫的又清楚又好。Abbott在1988的劃時代之作後，實際上把profession研究帶入瞭一個去曆史、脫嵌於政治經濟過程的新風尚，也促成瞭職業社會學逐漸與知識社會學閤流，個中得失，一言難盡。重新迴頭讀這本遺珠，可見profession不僅與相鄰的職業在jurisdictional power上競爭，也和其他的social agents競爭，比如資本、公衛、互助社、保險公司，從而畫中一塊邊界不斷變更的社會領域。所以曆史社會學是必須要迴到職業研究中來的，盡管專傢的好時代已經過去瞭。

One of its kind. Too good to miss.

醫學職業化曆史，脈絡清晰，與醫療及保險發展如影隨形的是社會不平等，國傢、資本與醫療行業本身持續拉鋸。保險部分各方博弈寫得驚心動魄，偶有莫名冷幽默，結尾感嘆也是蠻動人瞭："The great irony is that the opposition of the doctors and hospitals to public control of public programs set in motion entrepreneurial forces that may end up depriving both private doctors and local voluntary hospitals of their traditional autonomy."

這本書是我讀過的印象最深的美國醫學專業化和職業化的曆史。在美國的確不是先有法律或行政製度，最大的動因是業內人士反抗同行惡性競爭。這一方麵推動瞭行醫的標準化，另一方麵也製造瞭某種關於醫學的“神話”以及壟斷價格。
