引人入勝娓娓道來，語言到底是後天的文化現象而是先天本能，當然可以和稀泥地說兩方麵都有。但是這句話說瞭等於沒說。作者用淵博的知識儲備嚮我們論證瞭語言何以是一種本能。二十多年前的老書，有很多內容已經被世人所熟知，但這些問題能夠長久的激發人的興趣。我沒有見過對語言不感興趣的人，誇一個人很聰明很牛逼，常常是因為他會多門語言；語言作為一種本能和其他動物區彆開來，但是為什麼人不能生下來就會說話；母語是怎麼學的，一個小孩能夠很輕易地學會說話，為什麼學其他纔藝如彈琴跳舞要費勁得多；在認知水平更高級的成年時期再去學習外語為什麼如此睏難；母語學習對我們學外語有什麼啓示，等等。作者的態度有些悲觀，過瞭黃金期再去學外語真的是沒有辦法達到母語水平，但是你也不必非要達到母語水平不可，基辛格納博科夫這些大牛都沒有。
