英文世界經典漢語語法研究。不愧於標題的“functional”，除瞭著名的漢語是主題顯著的語言這一論斷之外，書中多處結閤篇章與交際精確解釋瞭語法現象。像助詞“瞭”和一種語氣詞解釋、“把”後NP的有定性與閤適該使用把字句、零代詞都是很好的功能解釋。
