自十三場以後，插科打諢的小醜從劇中消失，同時李爾王變得瘋瘋癲癲，在修辭層麵取代瞭小醜的反諷功能。前半段主要在講filial ingratitude（Sc. 11.13），把財産和傢長權力全部交齣去後，反而備受女兒唾棄，仿佛在講述子女履行贍養義務的故事，隻不過場景搬到瞭王室中，現實意義最為可觀。Edgar裝瘋賣傻講瞭一連串「hog in sloth, fox in stealth, wolf in greediness...lion in prey」，近似《狂人日記》第六節「獅子似的凶心，兔子的怯弱，狐狸的狡猾」，是否有聯係待考。當失去雙目的Gloucester毅然跳崖赴死，卻在Edgar的指引下沒能死成，一種啼笑皆非的荒誕感，於焉形成。大姐和二姐與Edmund的奸情交待得太晚，給人感覺突兀。
