约翰•鲍尔比是英国精神病学家、心理学家，母爱剥夺实验和依恋理论的创始人。早年在剑桥大学攻读医学和心理学。1946—1972年以陆军精神病学家的身份长期在塔维斯托克诊所和人类关系研究所工作，主要从事儿童和家庭精神病方面的医疗、教学和临床研究。他系统研究了母爱剥夺对人格发展的不良影响，提出了儿童对母亲的依恋理论。
