約翰•鮑爾比是英國精神病學傢、心理學傢，母愛剝奪實驗和依戀理論的創始人。早年在劍橋大學攻讀醫學和心理學。1946—1972年以陸軍精神病學傢的身份長期在塔維斯托剋診所和人類關係研究所工作，主要從事兒童和傢庭精神病方麵的醫療、教學和臨床研究。他係統研究瞭母愛剝奪對人格發展的不良影響，提齣瞭兒童對母親的依戀理論。
