ANY ONE FEELING were to characterize the making of this book,
it would be frustration. It seemed to me as though I went in fits
and starts, moving along productively and energetically, only to be
frozen by my own lack of creativity and external circumstances. Through-
out it all, many people have been present, whispering, "Keep going." I am
delighted to have the opportunity to send a huge thank you to all of them:
My three men: son Max Cullen, friend Kevin Cordima and father Rus-
sell Davis for their constant understanding as well as critical tasting. I am
also grateful to Kevin for computer advice and support.
My family: Henry, Joan, Russell, Chris and Owen Davis; Kelly and
Amelia Davis; Patty Davis and Jack Swig; and Geoff, Yami, Linc, All, Russ
prodding when
Linda Marino, my very special friend, confidante and colleague, for
her continual advice both technical and personal and most important,
for her friendship.
Deborah Moules and her family Brandon Boyd and Sienna Boyd, my
close friends and daily support.
Mariette and Robert Fitzgerald, lifelong friends.
My women's group for its solace, and the friendships of Marnie
Malarkey, Tess Hopper, Jan Lindsay and Lisa Batchelder, whose suste-
nance and encouragement is indescribable.
My neighbors Sheila, Bob, Mark and Amanda Bodwell, who once again
helped with countless tasting sessions and gave me wonderful feedback.
